Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

The globalization of the entertainment industry has led to an influx of foreign media content, particularly movies, into various parts of the world. In Nigeria, foreign movies, especially those from Hollywood and Bollywood, have become a significant part of the cultural landscape, influencing many aspects of life, including fashion trends. In Jos North Local Government Area, Plateau State, the youth population is particularly exposed to foreign films, and this exposure has had a notable impact on their fashion choices. Foreign movies often showcase glamorous, cutting-edge styles and trends that the youth, eager to emulate their favorite celebrities, may adopt in their daily lives. This phenomenon has been observed in various forms, from casual wear to formal attire, and in some cases, youth even align their personal identity with the fashion trends presented in foreign films. While this cultural exchange promotes diversity, it also raises concerns about the loss of traditional fashion values and the possible overshadowing of indigenous styles. Fashion, particularly in youth culture, is often influenced by the media they consume, and foreign films are a powerful tool for shaping the tastes, preferences, and values of young people (Okafor & Mohammed, 2023). This study will analyze how foreign movies influence the fashion trends of youths in Jos North, exploring both the positive and negative implications of this influence on their personal style and cultural identity.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the undeniable influence of foreign movies on fashion trends among Nigerian youths, there remains a limited body of research on how this phenomenon manifests specifically within the context of Jos North Local Government Area. The adoption of foreign fashion trends has become a widespread practice, but it is unclear how deeply these trends impact youths’ identities, values, and perceptions of local fashion. Some argue that foreign fashion trends promote creativity and open-mindedness among youth, while others contend that these trends undermine local cultural practices and traditional fashion aesthetics. Additionally, concerns have been raised about the commodification of fashion, with foreign movies contributing to the rise of consumerist behaviors, particularly among youths who might prioritize brand names and celebrity endorsements over cultural authenticity (Dike & Babajide, 2023). This study seeks to explore the extent to which foreign movies shape the fashion preferences of youths in Jos North, with an emphasis on understanding the broader cultural implications of these trends. The research will also examine whether there is any resistance to foreign fashion trends in favor of promoting indigenous Nigerian fashion in the face of globalized media consumption.
